“Sure, take a selfie with the Mona Lisa, but then turn around and take a look at it.” This is something my Dad told me recently. We were talking about ‘taking time to smell the roses’ and he told me this advice that he gives his study abroad students when he teaches in France each summer. This hit close to home as we approach the 4th of July holiday weekend and working extra hours to get everything done. Even with all of this hard work, it’s important to be in the moment and enjoy life as you live it.
It seems that we have an epidemic of overworking, here in the US. We are surrounded by an amazing country, with endless opportunities for fun, but we spend our days stuck at a desk and dreaming of what we want to be doing. I’m blessed to have my 4 partners be lovers of life. On any given day you will see Slaton surfing, Elliot attending a concert, Mike fishing, Harry traveling the world and me planning my next trip to see the sloths. Even though we all pursue our passions, it’s easy for us to get stuck in our work and bogged down by stress. Exercise, getting outside, laughter and hanging with friends are all great ways to battle this and something that I hope each of us can do more and more.
So, as we celebrate this long weekend, I hope that each of you gets away from your desk and pursues your passion. Go outside and get some sun. Leave the cell phone behind and go explore. An incredible world, with amazing people, surrounds us- let’s make sure we experience it while we have time!
